In keeping with the "Goth" in the title of this blog, I present this video.
Never having been to a Goth club, I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it's good for a laugh, anyway.

But, why Goth? What in the Hell is your interest in a self-abusive, self-mutilating, nihilistic, anti-social, psychotic sub-culture? I mean, do you want to have Ann Rice's baby or what...LOL!

The craziest thing is that this was very similar to the "liturgical dancing" that took place when I lived in Ohio. Replace the cup of cap with an earthenware bowl of incense and you just about have it.

Actually, pin, only some goths are as you describe (although there are those who fit your description perfectly). For a more . . . ah, mature . . . understanding of the phenomenon, feel free to attend my lectures on Romanticism and the Gothic sometime when I give them in my wife's classes at Macon State. I submit that anyone who could poke fun at himself and his culture by making the vid I posted couldn't possibly fit your description. :-)
As for Anne Rice . . . she's one who definitely does have issues. And since she's heterodox--to say the very least--I'll have no babies with her. :-)
Well, having been an English and Philosophy major, I understand the Romantic period and the "Gothic" novel. I just never made the connection to this..umm...phenomenon in our non-culture. Anyway, would love to discuss it with you over coffee sometime.
